K. Karunakaran, Puzhuthivakkam:
I would call The Hindu ’s campaign on solid waste management as nothing less than a revolution. Since the campaign started, people have been talking only about it - be it my colleagues, friends or neighbours. The Hindu has done a fantastic job of creating awareness on the problems of solid waste management and people want to know what to do next.
P. Malarvizhi, Kunrathur:
I read in The Hindu about today’s event and have come with all my children as they have to be taught how to take care of our environment from a very young age. But some of the elders in my locality are not even half as interested as my children. Children in schools should be taught the importance of source segregation and home composting.
V. Santhanam, Chromepet:
I appreciate the The Hindu for this campaign about solid waste management. My family is active in source segregation, but at the moment, it is not possible for all to engage in home composting or source segregation. Even if we provide segregated garbage, it is eventually mixed by the local bodies and dumped in its yards and subsequently burnt.
K.V. Preetha:
During the presentation, it was mentioned that 51 per cent of the total waste generated in homes is compostable and it is huge. A good portion of it is food, both stale and fresh, wasted by households. If we can ensure that not a morsel of food is wasted, this percentage of compostable waste can be further brought down.
Priya Varthini:
I have only one observation to make. The home composting using terracotta pots is very effective and people need not have any apprehensions at all. I have been composting kitchen waste at home for more than 6 months and I have had no problems at all. There is no foul smell or problems of insects and I seriously recommend others in the audience to go in for this simple yet effective method.
