Residents of four village panchayats located on the western side of Nandivaram-Guduvancheri Town Panchayat have appealed to the District Administration to help revive the old small subway near the level-crossing on Madambakkam Road for easy access to the Grand Southern Trunk Road.

In a petition submitted to the Collector, K. Baskaran here, on Tuesday, the residents alleged that the level-crossing was closed by the authorities without clearing the debris and the wild growth there prevented motorists and pedestrians from using the subway on the northern side of the level-crossing. Residents had to take a detour to reach their destinations.

Enquiries with officials revealed that the level crossing was closed on December 30 in order to facilitate the construction of a road overbridge. An effort taken by the Southern Railway to set up a light vehicle subway in between the old subway and the LC could not be completed due to seepage of ground water and other reasons.

At the same time, some Nandivaram-Guduvancheri residents claimed that the closure of Madambakkam Road crossing for the time being could not be construed as an obstruction for motorists coming from new residential layouts on their way to GST Road since the layout developers had already converted a waterway beneath a small railway bridge, located at a distance of about 1 km from that point, into an access road to their layouts from GST Road.
