Residents seeking enrolment in the Aadhaar scheme were shocked to find that applications were not available in Tambaram taluk office and Pallavaram Municipality last week.
Residents said that a notice at Aadhaar enrolment centres invited people to visit the offices on February 20, but when they did, forms were not available. However, municipal officials stated that 1,500 forms were issued that day, a claim denied by residents. They threatened to stage a protest and police finally assured them that forms would be available this week.
S. Ramani, a resident of Old Pallavaram, said people stood in the queue the whole day at the centre only to return home without getting the forms. Though enrolment work has been assigned to private agencies under the supervision of Revenue officials, government staff did not turn up at the centres, she alleged.
Tambaram RDO, D. Farida Bhanu said 1,200 tokens were issued for enrolling in the National Population Register. In Pallavaram, she said there was a shortage of forms and that it was sorted out.
