It is almost three months since Dr. Radhakrishnan Nagar Welfare Association, Thiruvanmiyur, embarked on an initiative to do away with the garbage bins through source segregation of garbage. Residents of Third Cross Street at Dr. Radhakrishnan Nagar are keen on making the initiative successful.
“There are nearly 50 households at Third Cross Street and the residents have decided to carry out the clean-up drive every last Sunday,” says Vidya Shankar, joint secretary of the Association.
Both children and adults were involved in the campaign. They were taught how to segregate garbage into into degradable and non-degradable wastes and keep them ready for conservancy workers.
“This way, there would be no need for common bins on the streets. We suggested it would be better if pits were created and the bio-waste was composted,” says Vidya.
As part of the next phase of the campaign, residents now go and visit their neighbours in Marudeeshwar Nagar, which also comes under the Association, and educate them on the subject. “Many in that neighbourhood are cooperating and rendering their support. We want to remove the two garbage bins at the intersection of Marudeeshwar Nagar and Sivagamipuram. Always, garbage could be found strewn across the area,” she says.
“The success of the initiative at Third Cross Street is encouraging and we want to extend our campaign to the rest of streets as well which includes Malaviya Avenue, Shanthi Avenue, RBI Colony and LIC Colony,” she adds.
