Residents’ associations and citizen groups have started to partner with the Chennai Corporation in commencing source segregation, said Corporation Commissioner Vikram Kapur.
Speaking at a symposium, Go Green Chennai , organised by The Hindu and Inner Wheel District 323 on Saturday, Mr. Kapur said “We in the Corporation are acutely aware of the difficulty you as citizens experience because of waste. We keep clearing the waste, at least the solid part of it. But it really pains me to see that we have not made much headway in terms of creating the right kind of an environment, the awareness. This is necessary for a reduction in the quantity of waste we dump.”
Mr. Kapur stressed the need for source segregation in more wards of the city with the assistance of residents’ association and citizen groups. “We are wasting wealth and creating waste,” he added.
In her keynote address, Director of En3 Deepa Sathiaram said that going green is not a choice anymore, it is a necessity. “From the economic angle, the simplest way is to go green,” she said. She stressed the need for saving on energy and recycling.
M.B. Nirmal of Exnora stressed the role of residents’ associations and citizen groups in going green. An exhibition of various products pertaining to ‘going green’ was also organised as part of the event. “I found some aspects such as environment friendly paint and bricks worth emulating,” said Preston Davis, a visitor.
