Residents and DYFI cadres of Taramani protested on Monday, condemning the negligence of the civic body which, they said, had resulted in the death of K. Dinesh.
Residents said despite repeated complaints, Chennai Corporation officials did not take steps to have the stormwater facility on CSIR Road closed.
Over 120 persons assembled on the 100 Feet Road in Taramani and organised a protest.
Dinesh, son of Kumar and Keerthika, was playing on the platform of CSIR Road on Saturday afternoon and later went missing. A Corporation conservancy worker retrieved his body from an open stormwater drain on Sunday.
Some residents said the civic body should consider installing iron lids for stormwater drains.
“The cement lids break easily,” a resident said.
The boy’s parents also took part in the protest.
“Our main demands are that Dinesh’s family should be given Rs. 5 lakh as compensation and action taken against the Corporation officials who were responsible,” said A. Vijayakumar, a DYFI cadre who took part in the protest.
He said the local councillor and Corporation officials had not visited the boy’s family after the accident.
“The councillor’s house is very near the protest site. She could have come and pacified the family or assured them that proper lids would be provided to cover stormwater drains,” said Vijayakumar.
The protestors said if Corporation failed to take action, they would be holding a protest again.
