Four youths who rushed to the rescue of a road accident victim allegedly stole Rs. 3.8 lakh from him while helping in transporting him to the hospital at Mangadu here.
According to police sources, Krishnamurthy (35) of Avadi, accountant in a private engineering college, was returning home on a motorcycle on October 20 evening. He was knocked down by a bus near the Kovur Bypass. Four persons who were in the vicinity came to his rescue. The victim who fell unconscious was shifted to a private hospital in Porur.
After regaining consciousness on Sunday, Krishnamurthy told police that the cash (Rs. 3.8 lakh) he was carrying in a bag at the time of the accident was missing. After hospital authorities said the persons who rescued the victim did not hand over any cash, a special team of the Mangadu police launched a manhunt for the suspects.
Following a tip-off, the team arrested Baskar (24), Balaji (22), Silambarasan (22) and Ameer (23) of Mugalivakkam. Rs. 3.7 lakh of the stolen money was recovered from them. “They seemed to be first time offenders. Krishnamurthy was taking the office cash home for depositing at the bank the following morning. The accused were produced in a court and remanded to judicial custody,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Ambattur) R. Samuthirapandian said.
