The newly-formed Perumbakkam Federation of Associations convened its first meet recently.
Various civic issues were discussed at the meet, with the design of stormwater drains (SWDs) at KAMPERS dominating the discussion.
KAMPERS consists of Kailash Nagar, Mookambigai Nagar, Perumal Nagar, Rathinam Nagar, Sairam Nagar, Shanthi Nagar, Gurudev Colony, Indira Priyadarshini Nagar, Krishna Nagar, Prabhu Nagar and Anandammal Nagar.
Residents pointed out that the stormwater drains had been constructed over a culvert and was at a level higher than the Sholinganallur-Medavakkam Road. Residents want the stormwater drains to be re-constructed to ensure rainwater from the above-mentioned localities drained into them.
Lack of illumination
Another major issue discussed by residents was the lack of streets lamps on the stretch between SEZ-ELCOT and Perumbakkam First Grade Village Panchayat Office on Sholinganallur–Medavakkam Road. Due to poor illumination, motorists driving towards Medavakkam from Sholinganallur and vice-versa find it difficult to negotiate the stretch.
Residents also made an appeal to the Perumbakkam First Grade Village Panchayat, seeking that roads be laid at the earliest. Of the 22 interior roads in Perumbakkam, only three roads — Kailash Nagar First Street, Kailash Nagar Second Street and Kailash Nagar Third Street — have a concrete surface.
“We learnt that funds have been sanctioned to lay the other roads but work is yet to begin,” says an office-bearer. Other issues discussed at the meet include non-functional traffic signals at the intersection of Sholinganallur–Medavakkam Main Road, First Main Road and Prabhu Nagar Road and at the Global Hospital intersection. Construction of underground sewage system, sewage treatment plant, door-to-door collection of garbage and street dog menace were also discussed.
