By the time the northeast monsoon arrives this year, the city and its neighbouring districts will be better equipped to tackle the surplus flow in rivers and augment water needs.
The State Ground and Surface Water Resources Data Centre, Water Resources Department (WRD), is in the process of installing telemetric river water level recorders in rivers across the State, including those around Chennai. The equipment will be fixed at the tail-end of the rivers. where they meet the sea.
Gauge wells have been built along river beds in 53 locations in the State, including by the Palar, Cauvery and Thamaraparani. In the wells, sensors will record water flow and a modem will transmit data to the monitoring room at Taramani and its website.
Around Chennai, the wells have been built in Nandambakkam along the Adyar, Lakshmipuram along the Araniar, Korattur anaicut along the Cooum, Esoor along the Palar river and Vallur along the Kosasthalaiyar. The Rs. 6-crore project will be completed in three months.
