Expressing concern over rash driving on the narrow 15th Street, which connects Brindavan Street in West Mambalam and Fourth Avenue Main Road in Ashok Nagar, residents have sought reconstruction of speed-breakers on the stretch.
This stretch, 30-feet-wide and 100-metre-long, had two speed-breakers, which got levelled to the ground as it was re-laid with a generous topping of bitumen.
There are two sharp curves where 15th Street intersects with Second Avenue Main Road and Brindavan Street at the point where Doraiswamy subway is located.
Due to these dangerous bends, motorists and pedestrians coming in the opposite direction (that is, Second Avenue Main Road in Ashok Nagar) don’t have a clear view of the stretch and often caught unawares, a factor that is making it increasingly accident-prone.
“As the road is a one-way, motorists drive at breakneck speed,” said G. Venket, a resident of West Mambalam.
As many schools are located in the vicinity, residents want the speed-breakers to be re-laid at the earliest along with reflectors and signboards. Residents also sought markings on a zebra-crossing at the intersection.
According to Corporation officials, speed breakers on a stretch as short as 15th Street will slow down the flow of traffic result in chaos at the intersection of Second Avenue Main Road and Fourth Avenue Main Road.
“Due to traffic chaos, we did not re-lay the speed-breaker on 15thStreet. However, we will take necessary steps to ensure safety at the intersection,” said a Corporation official.
