Usually, it is zumba dancing, free cycle rides, book reading and painting that attract people to the car-free weekend at Elliot’s Beach.
However, this Sunday, there was an added attraction with the launch of the redesigned The Hindu on Sunday. Rajiv C. Lochan, Managing Director and CEO, Kasturi and Sons Ltd., and Mukund Padmanabhan, Editor, The Hindu, unveiled the redesigned newspaper to warm applause, after which, the paper was distributed to visitors free of cost.
R. Karunanidhi, a resident of Besant Nagar, who received a copy of The Hindu from Mr. Padmanabhan, appreciated the efforts taken to reach out to the readers by organising an event on the beach.
The car-free Sunday, where no motorised vehicles are allowed on Elliot’s Beach road and which is organised by The Hindu in association with the Chennai Corporation and the City Traffic Police, is a hit among both residents and beach-goers alike. The initiative offers various activities for walkers.
On Sunday, a large number of them spent time reading at The Hindu Group Reading Zone. Children who accompanied their parents were engaged in painting activities. During the launch, identification cards were distributed to hawkers engaged by The Hindu group of publications in the city.
