The Hamsadhwani R. Ramachandran award of excellence was presented to Ramana Sunritya Aalaya (RASA) Trust, which conducts music and dance classes for children with special needs, here on Wednesday.

The award, received by renowned Bharatanatyam dancer and RASA trustee Chitra Vishweshwaran, comprised a shawl, shield and cash purse of Rs. 25,000. Principal secretary (special initiatives) of the State government, K. Rajaraman, said dealing with special children was a difficult task. The organisation, through music, helped such children. “Music is viewed as a form of entertainment. It is a divine tool to connect with the ultimate,” he said.

Former director general of police R. Nataraj said Carnatic music soothened the ears of the listener and the legacy of R. Ramachandran should continue.

In her acceptance speech, Ms. Visweshwaran said the school run by the trust taught music, dance and painting to children with special needs. Learning various art forms helped the special children express their feelings as they could not communicate verbally, she added.
