Ramesh Kumar, a 50-year-old welder from Lalgudi town in Tiruchi district, had been unable to work or sleep well, due to progressive tiredness, breathlessness and chest pain for the past three years.

On investigation, the department of cardiology found he had both congenital and acquired heart disease, with enlargement of all four chambers of the heart.

There were also several defects in his arteries.

On February 24, he underwent a surgery. Sanjay Theodore led the team that performed multiple procedures to correct all the defects in a single sitting.

The procedure took about four hours and within 24 hours, the patient was able to eat and sleep well.
