The Pongal season usually sees a spike in the garbage dumped on the beach.

A few months after handing over conservancy operations on the Marina to NGOs, Ramky Enviro Engineers resumed operations on the stretch on Pongal.

The move comes following a request from the Chennai Corporation, owing to the pile-up of garbage on beaches, places of worship and parks. At the recent Corporation Council meeting, the civic body had announced that a new 120-strong team of workers would take up conservancy operations on the Marina.

The firm sent 58 labourers on Thursday. A total of 80 labourers and beach cleaning equipment will be deployed to clean the sands and will join the 120-member team from the NGOs on Saturday.

Over 3 lakh people are expected to visit the Marina on Saturday. “We have advanced the commencement of cleaning operations from 6.30 a.m. to 5 a.m.,” said an official.

“About 500 tonnes more of garbage has been collected in the city during Pongal,” said an official. 2,226 tonnes of garbage was dumped in Kodungaiyur on Friday. 1,977 tonnes was dumped on the previous day. Around 2,365 tonnes was collected in Perungudi on Thursday, against 1,893 tonnes by 5 p.m. on Friday.
