Ramanathan Krishnan wins ‘Spirit of Mylapore’ award

Tennis player Ramanathan Krishnan received the sixth Sundaram Finance ‘Spirit of Mylapore’ award on the final day of the Mylapore Festival on Sunday.

T.T. Srinivasaraghavan, managing director of Sundaram Finance Ltd., who presented the award to Mr. Krishnan, said the tennis player was a true ambassador of the sport and a role model for any aspiring youngster and sportsman.

Mr. Krishnan was the first Asian to achieve international recognition with the Boys title at Wimbledon. He also won the national title eight times in a row helping the country reach the Davis Cup final in 1966.

Sundaram Finance instituted the annual ‘Spirit of Mylapore’ award in 2009 to recognise a long-time resident or institution of Myalpore who/that has contributed significantly to the culture and heritage of Mylapore, according to a press release.

The award was part of the 12 edition of the Sundaram Finance Mylapore Festival that was conducted from January 9 to 12. It had several events including kolam contests, kutcheris, street food stalls, heritage walks, arts and handicrafts exhibitions.
