Rally to raise awareness of proper disposal of garbage

January 10, 2011 12:43 am | Updated 12:43 am IST - CHENNAI:

Members of Kapaleeswarar Nagar Welfare Association in Neelankarai panchayat held a rally on Sunday to raise awareness about proper disposal of garbage.

Association secretary T. Kuppusami said the rally was held following the panchayat's refusal to permit dumping of garbage. “Neelankarai panchayat limit has around 10 residents' welfare associations. Until recently we had made arrangements to collect and dump garbage at an allotted space. But recently, the panchayat officials denied us the permission to use the land. Neither does the panchayat clear garbage everyday,” Mr. Kuppusami said.

Avoiding plastic

Following this, the association held the rally. “We are teaching the residents to avoid using plastic. Twenty-two of 400 residents in our association have started converting the biodegradable waste into manure at their home,” he said.

The association has also tied up with Anna University and IIT-Madras to dispose of plastic waste.

The institutions have made arrangements to collect plastic waste, Mr. Kuppusami added.
