City residents, concerned over the increasingly warm weather, may now have respite for a few days.
An upper air cyclonic circulation over Sri Lanka and its neighbourhood is likely to bring some rains over the State. According to officials of the meteorological department, places in northern parts of the State, including Chennai, would receive more rains till this weekend. By next week, interior areas will begin receiving more showers.
On Thursday, several stations across the State, including Kancheepuram, Tiruvarur, Madurai and Cuddalore districts, received good rainfall. Tambaram too recorded 2 cm of rain during the 24 hours till 8.30 a.m. on Thursday.
However, the day temperature continued to soar in Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam at nearly 37 degree Celsius, two degrees above normal. Residents, however, said they did not feel the heat as much as during the past few days because of cloud cover in some parts of the city. Motorists found it relatively easy to drive on the roads.
Avadi and Pattabiram recorded nearly 3 cm of rainfall on Thursday evening. People living in several areas such as Devarajapuram, Chatram, Charles Nagar, Thandurai and Modern City had to suffer for several hours without electricity. Residents of Pattabiram too spent several hours in the dark owing to faults in electricity cables.
Meanwhile, meteorological department officials said Chennai would experience rainfall during evening or night hours till the weekend.
The department forecasts that rains or thundershowers may occur in some areas during the evenings or nights. But days may be warmer owing to clear skies. The maximum temperature will hover around 36 degree Celsius till Saturday.
Last year, the maximum temperature soared to 37.3 degree Celsius on August 3, with the city receiving 27 mm of rainfall on a single day on August 14 last year.
