The rain spell on Wednesday and Thursday morning affected life in several districts of the State.
Most places of the State's coastal stretch have experienced rain.
During the 24-hour-period that ended at 8-30 p.m. on Thursday, Puducherry Airport recorded the highest of 19 cm, followed by Ramanathapuram – 16 cm. Cuddalore and Tuticorin 9 cm each; Ambasamudram (Tirunelveli district), Marakkanam and Vanur (both Villupuram district) 8 cm each and Kelambakkam (Kancheepuram) 7 cm.
Consequently, educational institutions in many districts, including Chennai, Kancheepuram, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Tirunelveli and Tiruvarur remained closed during the day, besides those in Puducherry.
The discharge from the Mettur reservoir for irrigation in the Cauvery delta had been suspended.
Heavy rain continued to lash different parts of the Kanyakumari district and water levels in all the four dams, including Pechipprai, Perunchani, Chittar I and Chittar II, were gradually on the rise. Y.E.A.Raj, Deputy Director General of Meteorology, Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai, said dynamic models indicated that the present spell, which commenced four days ago, was likely to extend till November 2.
A weak trough off eastern coast of Sri Lanka, extending from the southeast Bay towards south Andhra Pradesh, contributed to the rainfall. A low pressure area off the west coast over the southeast coast off Arabian Sea might also intensify, bringing more rainfall.
