For the third consecutive day, the low pressure area, which since has moved towards the Karnataka and Rayalaseema region, brought rainfall to Chennai and its suburbs. Many localities in the southern fringes of the city received good showers on Wednesday.
During the 24-hour period ending 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday, Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam registered 52 mm and 47 mm of rainfall respectively. However, both the observatories received only 1.8 mm and 6.6 mm rainfall till 8.30 p.m. on Wednesday as the low pressure area had moved away from the city, according to Meteorological Department.
Many areas in the southern parts of the city such as Adyar, Mylapore and Taramani received intermittent showers. Residents said the rain became widespread towards evening and several localities, including Egmore, Aminjikarai and T.Nagar received showers. Blacktopping of many roads has been washed away by the rain, exposing the gravel beneath, they said.
The showers over the past few days in the southern suburbs have taken a toll on the roads. The maximum rainfall received so far in 24 hours was on November 7 with 4.9 cm recorded in Tambaram.
Traffic worsened on the busy stretches of Medavakkam Main Road in Keelkattalai, Kovilambakkam and Madipakkam and of Velachery Main Road in Selaiyur and Pallikaranai.
The worst affected streets are those on low-level areas such as Madipakkam and Keelkattalai. Residents of Madipakkam complained that the village panchayat authorities had not taken any precautionary measures. Residents of Raja Rajeswari Nagar had to wade through sewage mixed rainwater to reach their homes. The Madipakkam bus terminus was a picture of neglect as sewage stagnated there.
The Meteorological Department forecast that Chennai and neighbouring districts would get rain or thundershower in some areas on Thursday.
