Widening work on Race Course Road on the eastern side of Guindy Railway station began recently. Chennai Corporation officials said that 24 bus route roads had been identified for improvement in 2014 and this road was selected for widening at a cost of Rs. 2.43 crore. Widening of the stretch will ease traffic congestion on this important bus route road, officials said.

Compensation package

The Corporation identified a piece of land measuring 2,222 square metres (24,000 square feet) belonging to Madras Race Club two years ago. Widening work was initiated but, it was soon stalled due to the issue of a compensation package. Now, with land acquisition hurdles sorted out, the work has begun, officials said.

Besides widening the road by a little over six metres, bus bays, stormwater drain with pavements and medians will be built.

To ensure people walk across the road to the railway station safely, the Corporation is planning a pedestrian subway and they are in touch with the Railway administration for the same, officials added.

Bus bays, stormwater drains and medians will also be created
