As a first step towards making Central Institute of Technology (CIT) campus, Taramani, a secure premises on the lines of other premier institutions in the neighbourhood, Public Works Department is constructing gates in two spots to restrict public movement.
Following requests from the Commissioner of Technical Education, employees and students in the CIT campus, the department had started work on the gates — one on 2 Main Road and another near Institute of Printing Technology. “This is part of the larger project to build a compound wall around the campus spread over 54 acres,’’ said a PWD official.
The CIT campus houses several government and private educational and research institutions, including Central Polytechnic College, Asian College of Journalism and Institute of Leather Technology. The combined student strength is nearly 4,000. As the area has thick tree cover and is secluded, it is often a haven for people involved in theft and illegal activities, PWD officials point out.
Students had staged a road roko a few months ago seeking enhanced security and curbs on trespassing. After the recent murder of a techie in Siruseri, the demand had only grown stronger. “The gates will be ready by the end of the month. A guard will be stationed round the clock,” said an official.
The campus is used as a thoroughfare by residents in neighbouring areas such as Kanagam, Sriram Nagar, Pallipattu and Kalikunram. “We have provided access to Kanagam and Kalikunram through 4 Cross Road and residents of Sriram Nagar and Pallipattu can use 1 Cross Road,” the official said.
