March 31, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:32 am IST - CHENNAI:

Members of the All India Democratic Women’s Association and several senior citizens staged a demonstration near the Taluk Office in Tambaram on Monday, protesting the alleged denial of old age pension.

Addressing the gathering, AIDWA south Chennai secretary Mariyal said the State government stopped disbursing pension to more than 1,200 beneficiaries in Tambaram revenue division three months ago. With no other means of income, the elderly were struggling.

‘No verification or spot inspection’

“The officials removed the names of genuine beneficiaries without spot inspection or verification. If the government fails to disburse old age pension to all beneficiaries, we will intensify the agitation,” she added.

While accepting the applications for old age pension from 65 women, revenue officials said their applications will be scrutinised over the next few days and action initiated to disburse the pension according to individual cases.
