The family of a 41-year-old man, who had been an inmate of Puzhal prison and was pronounced dead under mysterious circumstances early on Friday, assembled outside the Adambakkam police station in the evening accusing the authorities of foul play. According to sources, Raja, also known as Billa bhai, was a painter. Earlier this month, the police picked him up from his house on Mannadi Amman Koil Street in Adambakkam.

The police alleged he was involved in a robbery. Raja was subsequently lodged in Puzhal prison. He is reported to have complained of difficulty in breathing following which he was taken to the Government Royapettah Hospital. He passed away, early on Friday.

In the evening, his relatives gathered outside the Adambakkam police station and alleging foul play behind his death. They demanded a full-fledged probe into the death.

Only after the police promised to look into the matter did the crowds disperse. Further investigations are on. Raja’s relatives said he was never involved in crime in the past.
