Chennai Corporation will start a web-based self-assessment system for property tax in the city. The civic body’s EDP cell has completed the design of the system and has commenced a study of the queries pertaining to the existing online application for property tax assessment to rectify deficiencies.
“Under the new system, property owners will be able to get property tax assessment orders within seconds of submission of the online applications. They will also be able to pay the property tax immediately. Under the existing system, the property tax assessment orders are issued only after the applications are downloaded and field inspection of the property is completed. The property owners will take a printout of the assessment orders themselves after the new system is in place,” said an official of Chennai Corporation.
The properties assessed through the new system will be randomly selected for verification by officials later. Last year, the civic body constituted a committee to verify property tax assessments made by assistant revenue officers. The committee was entrusted with the task of meeting on Fridays to review property tax assessments made by assistant revenue officials at any of the 15 zones, and dispose of all the proposals for property tax assessment during the week. A number of property tax assessments of new buildings have been delayed because of the existing system.
