For those in search of adventure tourism and destinations offering the splendours of nature, the Sultanate of Oman promises a slew of such pristine locations and a wide array of adventure sports.

As part of the recent initiatives to promote Oman as a luxury tourist destination, the Tourism Ministry of Oman has entered into agreements with the Government of India and tourism agencies as well, said Lubaina Sheerazi, Representative India, Sultanate Of Oman. She was in the city on Wednesday to promote and strengthen trade networks with travel agencies.

Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai are the cities in India where Oman has decided to focus for promoting tourism. As against the notion that tourists from Chennai are cost-conscious and look for budget destinations, the trade and tourism agencies have recorded a perceptible increase in the number of people opting for luxury destinations such as Europe, Ms. Sheerazi said. Like other Indian cities, over 90 per cent of the travel between Chennai and Oman has been for business and employment. The trade between the two countries in sectors was predominantly in the areas of oil and infrastructure, while tourism remained a niche segment.

In its first phase, the Oman Ministry of Tourism would in association with trade and tourism agencies come up with attractive tourist packages in the five cities. “This would be followed by promotional initiatives in tier II cities, which are also potential tourism markets.” Observing that some recently released Tamil films have been shot in the picturesque locations of Oman, she said there are plans to sign agreements with the Tamil film industry to familiarise the filmmakers with lesser-known destinations.
