Projects cleared for makeover of city roads

The Chennai Corporation Council, on Thursday, approved projects that will give city roads a makeover.

Among projects in the pipeline are plans to shift transformers and electrical cables on footpaths and putting to use technology that will allow faster laying of concrete roads. A total of 18,000 roads have been chosen, and work will be completed in phases, the entire lot being covered by May 2014.

Shifting of obstructions on footpaths of 71 roads will begin shortly. The Council passed a resolution for payment of Rs.4.72 crore to the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation for shifting of the structures for completion of the work on 48.52 km of roads.

The Council also approved work orders for laying concrete on many interior roads such as Boat Club Road Third Avenue, Cenotaph First Street, Alwarpet Second Street, Giri Road and Avvai Shanmugam Salai.
