Conservancy operations in 88 sq km of the expanded city will be entrusted to a private operator by the Chennai Corporation.
The civic body on Thursday invited bids for selection of the operator for collection, segregation, transportation and disposal of garbage in the proposed new zones of Teynampet (Zone IX), Kodambakkam (Zone X) and Adyar (Zone XIII).
The existing private operator, Neel Metal Fanalca, was entrusted with the conservancy work in four zones – Pulianthope, Triplicane, Adyar and Kodambakkam. It was decided to terminate the contract of NMF and float a tender for identifying a new operator. NMF would operate till December 31 this year.
Many of the areas, particularly Pulianthope zone, have been left out of the new contract and several have been added, including Saidapet. The new operator would be required to collect garbage from all bus route roads by 9 a.m. Failure to collect garbage before the stipulated time would attract penalty.
A total of 113 bus route roads in Teynampet zone, 93 in Kodambakkam and 56 in Adyar would be promptly cleared before 9 a.m. after contract is awarded to the new player, said an official of the Chennai Corporation. Conservancy operations in the interior roads of the zones would be carried out before 1 p.m. The civic body has planned to focus more on monitoring of the conservancy operations by the private player.
Of the three zones to be covered by the private conservancy operator, Adyar with 13 wards has the largest area of 40 sq km. The Adyar zone covers areas such as R.A.Puram, Adyar, Thiruvanmiyur, Guindy and Velachery. Teynampet zone with 25 sq km is spread across 18 wards in areas such as Chepauk, Triplicane, Mylapore, Santhome, Nungambakkam, Thousand Lights, Royapettah and Alwarpet.
Kodambakkam is the smallest among the three with an area of 23 sq km with 16 wards in areas including T.Nagar, Saidapet, Virugambakam, Vadapalani, Saligramam and Kodambakkam.
A total of 1,500 tonnes of garbage would be collected from the three zones by the private player. The private operator would commence work on January 1, 2012 for a period of seven years.
