Heritage brand of milk will be costly by Rs. 2 per litre from Saturday.
According to officials at Heritage Foods Pvt. Ltd., the prices of standardised milk and full cream milk are being increased due to hike in procurement prices. In January too, the company had hiked prices of both varieties.
From March 1, standardised milk (4.5 per cent fat) will cost Rs. 42 per litre and full cream milk (6 per cent fat) will be priced at Rs. 44 per litre.
Some other private brands too are contemplating increasing milk prices. “Due to shortage of milk, farmers are hiking the price of milk they supply,” said a company official.
Industry sources said with private players increasing the price of milk, the demand for Aavin milk from the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Milk Producers’ Federation would increase as it has consumer-friendly prices.
The city consumes around 25 lakh litres of milk a day, of which Aavin supplies 11.50 lakh litres. Private milk brands constitute around 11 lakh litres. Around 3 lakh litres of unpacked milk is also sold in and around the city.
