A 26-year-old prisoner committed suicide by cutting his wrist at the Puzhal prison on Wednesday morning. According to the police, Ganesh of Andhra Pradesh was arrested last year under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.

He was carrying drugs for a Madurai-based person when the Chennai police arrested him.

No one came to meet him in prison and he could not get bail too. “Recently, when he called a friend, he came to know that his girlfriend had ended her life. He has been depressed after that,” said a police officer.

On Wednesday morning, around 10.30 a.m, he cut his wrist with a blade. He was rushed to the Government Stanley hospital but died at 6 p.m.

Those in need of counselling can avail of the State’s health helpline 104 and Sneha’s suicide prevention helpline 044-24640050.
