Prisoner commits suicide

A remand prisoner allegedly committed suicide by hanging inside the Puzhal prison here on Saturday afternoon. Police said he took the extreme step after being dejected over his family members abandoning him.

Sources with Puzhal police identified the inmate as Sadharam (35), a daily-wage labourer and a native of Odisha, was arrested in Arani following the murder of following the murder of his wife in March, 2012. He was remanded in custody and lodged in Puzhal prison for six months now but none of his relatives or friends visited him nor did they try for his bail. He slipped into depression in prison.

On Saturday afternoon, his fellow inmates found him hanging in his cell and alerted the prison authorities. They conducted preliminary investigations and sent his body for post-mortem. Puzhal police registered a case on the Sadharam’s death and are investigating further, sources added.
