The principal of a private matriculation school was arrested by the Thoraipakkam police on charges of sexually abusing a 10-year-old-girl.

The parents of the victim and others gathered before the school in Telephone Nagar, Perungudi, demanding action against him on Thursday morning. The school has over 1,200 students studying from LKG to Plus Two.

The Class V student had not been attending classes for some time. Her parents found that the principal, Jayapaul, 44, had misbehaved with her.

On Thursday, the parents arrived at the school and protested before police personnel, demanding that the accused be handed over to them.

A tense situation prevailed as other parents also gathered in the area.

The police interrogated Jayapaul on the school premises. After he admitted to having committed the offence, he was arrested under Sections 7 (sexual assault) and 8 (punishment for sexual assault) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012.

The police said he faced similar charges while working at a private school in Tiruvannamalai earlier.
