A 40-year-old assistant temple priest was arrested under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for allegedly sexually assaulting a three-and-a-half-year-old girl in Choolaimedu on Saturday.

According to the police, the girl’s grandmother took her to the temple on Saturday.

Udayakumar, 40, the assistant to the temple priest, reportedly took the girl inside the temple and sexually assaulted her. The child told her grandmother about the incident and she informed her relatives and friends. “They dragged Udayakumar out and handed him over to the Choolaimedu police station where they lodged a complaint. The case was referred to the Thousand Lights All Woman Police Station,” said a police officer.

After interrogation, the police booked him under Section 8 of the POCSO Act (Punishment for sexual assault) and remanded him in judicial custody. Further investigation is on.
