The Coast Guard and Navy along with police have launched a joint drill to test their preparedness in dealing with 26/11 type terror attacks.
Under the drill, code-named ‘Operation Rakshak’ which was launched on Sunday night, five Coast Guard sailors disguised as ’terrorists’ tried to ‘intrude’ into Chennai and were ‘nabbed’ by police here on Monday. They were later taken for ’interrogation’
The drill, aimed at preventing terror strikes both from land and sea, follows a similar operation recently, titled ’Operation Barricade,’ police said.
The Coast Guard sailors disguised as terrorists were taken into custody near the harbour while trying to sneak in to attack ‘potential targets’ the sources said.
Police stepped up security across the state as part of the drill.
Following the Mumbai terror attacks in November last year, when the perpetrators had come through the sea route, state police in association with other security agencies including Coast Guard and Navy had decided to conduct such drills to check their preparedness in guarding the state’s 1076 km coastline.
