Poverty drives couple to end life

October 15, 2009 02:24 pm | Updated 02:25 pm IST - CHENNAI:

Driven by debts and acute poverty, a couple allegedly committed suicide by hanging at Korukkupet here on Wednesday night.

According to police sources, D. Ravi (35) of Ilaya Mudali Street ran into debts after he suffered huge losses in business. On Wednesday, he reportedly had a discussion with his wife R. Maheswari (30) and the couple left their school-going children R. Chitra (12) and R. Santosh (5) at a relative's place in J.J. Nagar.

Early on Thursday, there was no response from the house locked from the inside when a friend of the family visited. Sensing trouble she peeped through the window and saw Ravi and Maheswari hanging from the ceiling.

On information, the Korukkupet police forced open the door. The bodies were shifted to the Stanley Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem, the sources added.
