A city consumer forum has ordered a post office to pay a compensation of Rs. 2,000 to a couple for wrongly debiting a sum from their savings account.

The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum, Chennai (North) comprising its president R. Mohandoss and member A. Dayalan also directed the sub-post master to refund the sum with nine per cent interest.

P.R. Menon and Parvathy Menon said they had a joint-bank account with the Jawahar Nagar post office. In 2011, they received a letter from the post office which said Rs. 22,650 had been wrongly credited to their account. They were requested to produce their pass book for verification. The complainants had stated that since the incorrect entries pertained to 2001- 2004, they did not have the old passbook.

However, the post office debited Rs. 22,650 from their account on June 30, 2011.

The post office contended that there was no negligence in recovering the sum wrongly credited. However, the forum said the post office had not explained how the sum was debited and the adjustment would amount to deficiency.
