The State government will launch a web portal next month to guide foreign IT firms that seek to set up base in Tamil Nadu, IT Secretary P W C Davidar said.
Speaking to The Hindu on the sidelines of the conference on cyber security ‘Emerging cyber threats and challenges' here on Saturday, he said the portal would have details of space available, talent pool, SEZs and schemes available for promotion of Information Technology.
“We have done a lot of development after the announcement by the Minister” he said.
The portal would have provision for advertisement on IT space available in various parts of the State.
The State government would also release an information security policy for all its departments by the end of May, said Mr.Davidar.
“We are in the process of developing over 10 web applications for various departments of the State government,” he added.
There was a huge local resource base on e-security in Chennai and there was need for tapping that expertise, said Mr.Davidar. He stressed the need for a debate on the right balance between security and control for protecting digital assets. “If we have to be more secure we need to have more control,” he said.
Setting up computer forensic labs was essential to tackle cyber criminals, said N. Lakshmi Narayanan, vice-chairman, Cognizant Technology Solutions. Cybercriminals were constantly bettering themselves with newer business models and emerging technologies, such as cloud computing.
Protecting the digital assets of the company was a challenge as students of the gaming generation felt that their freedom was curtailed if companies tried to control them in disseminating information about the company through social networking.
“This year we are recruiting 12,000 engineers,” said Mr.Narayanan.
Change in behaviour
The behaviour of the younger generation was going through a revolutionary change and we have to educate them in future, he added.
“The way internet, cellphone and cable TV have affected relationships is tremendous and we need a new kind of policeman to protect the individual from cyber threats,” said Chennai Commissioner of Police T. Rajendran.
