A 35-year old policeman, who allegedly tried to stop a group of children from fighting and ended up slapping the father of one of them, was arrested in Egmore on Saturday evening.

Suresh is a police constable posted in the Director General of Police office building. He stays at the quarters in Pudupet.

At 3.30 p.m. on Saturday, he had gone to meet his uncle staying near the Rangachari park in Egmore.

S. Venkatachalapathy, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Egmore, said that Suresh spotted some children fighting when he was taking a stroll in the park. He tried to pacify them and stop the fight.

Meanwhile, John, father of one of the children, argued on behalf of his child. “As Suresh was in plainclothes, John did not realise that he was a policeman,” said Mr. Venkatachalapathy.

A wordy duel ensued between the two. An enraged Suresh slapped John, who lost three teeth.

Based on a complaint, Suresh was arrested and remanded. “John works as a temporary office assistant in the Secretariat. He is not a government servant, but hired privately,” said Mr. Venkatachalapathy.
