A special sub inspector of police drowned near Chennai port during the search for the body of a colleague’s son, who had drowned off the Marina on Sunday. P.C. Srinivasan (50), a traffic SSI, attached to Sembium police, left around 2 p.m. on a fibre boat along with six others hoping to locate the body of Koushik, son of sub inspector Duraibabu of Sembium traffic.

After a three-hour-long unsuccessful search, they were returning when a giant tide hit the boat, throwing Srinivasan into the sea. He tried to swim but the strong tide overwhelmed him. His body was recovered by the crew.

Srinivasan is survived by his wife Radha and two children.
