Police used mild force on Thursday to disperse some students who allegedly travelled on footboard in a Metropolitan Transport Corporation bus and interfered with the work of the crew.
According to police sources, the students of a college on Kamarajar Salai boarded the bus to celebrate ‘Bus Day'. As the bus was approaching the new Assembly and Secretariat complex on Anna Salai, the students on footboard tried to scale on top of the vehicle and also forced the driver to stop.
Police personnel deployed on bandobust duty intervened and asked the students to disperse. When they offered resistance, police used mild force, the sources added.
In another incident on Thursday, students of a private college clashed with some local people near Thiruverkadu. In the melee that followed, the students allegedly threw stones on four Metropolitan Transport Corporation buses, damaging the window panes.
At Teynampet, a student of an arts college in Nandanam was arrested on charges of throwing stones on an MTC bus resulting in damage to its windshield. Police said G. Manikandan of Ponniamman Temple Street in Padi was apprehended by the police after he and his friends had a heated argument with bus conducted Narasimha Rao.
While alighting at a stop near their college on Wednesday, some students threw stones on the bus. A special team formed to investigate the case arrested Manikandan, police added.
Held with stolen card
A man who allegedly stole the handbag of a woman and tried to use her credit card to purchase jewellery was detained by the police for investigation.
According to police, the manager of a jewellery store on NSC Bose Road alerted the local police that a customer had given a credit card to purchase 12 sovereigns of jewellery. However, the bank authorities had blocked the card for any transaction.
When police reached and detained the accused, whose name was given as Dinesh Agarwal (39) of Kolkata, the suspect confessed to having stolen the handbag of a woman a couple of days ago. He tried to use the credit card that was found in the bag.
