The MKB Nagar police suspect two cars, including an XUV that was involved in an accident on Saturday night, might have been used in a case of international drug smuggling.
According to the police, acting on information received about the cars, police teams tracked them down and chased them on West Avenue, MKB Nagar, on Saturday around 10.30 p.m. “Sub-inspector Vimal Nath received information that some persons were dealing with drugs in West Avenue. He informed us and when we reached the spot, the two cars started speeding,” said N. Natarajan, inspector, MKB Nagar police.
However, the XUV hit a median and turned turtle. Noticing this, the other car, too, stopped. The police then found a few sample packets of the drug ephedrine. While four passengers in the cars were arrested, a few others are absconding.
“Due to the impact, the air-bags in the car popped out and the suspects could not escape. Some persons in the other car escaped,” said an officer of the MKB Nagar police.
According to the police, the suspects are Jaffer Sadiq (28), his brother Mydeen Khan (22), Nagoor Meeran (21) and Mohammed Ismail (21), all residents of MKB Nagar and surrounding localities.
“During interrogation, they said that the drugs were usually sent to Malaysia. They had got the drug packets from one Karthik living in Ambattur. As he was not found in his house, we seized his mobile phones, laptop and some money,” said a senior police officer.
Police sources said one kilogram of ephedrine costs Rs. 4 lakh in the local market and Rs. 40 lakh in the international market.
“We are investigating whether they were trying to provide samples before sending the actual consignment, or selling the drugs in the city,” said a source.
