Child welfare activists have slammed the police for allegedly detaining and beating up two juveniles in connection with a motorcycle theft on Saturday.

Activists claim that the boys, aged 14 and 17, were beaten up mercilessly by the police attached to the Chintadripet F-1 police station while their families waited outside.

A. Narayanan, director, CHANGEindia, said, “We received information about their custody, and when we went to the station, we saw the children being beaten up and forced to confess their involvement in the theft. Finally, after seeking intervention from the DCP of Triplicane, the boys were let go, but only after 11 p.m.,” he said.

The organisation has recently completed its social audit of 50 police stations in the city to find out if they were child-friendly.

“We will soon be publishing the report,” he said.

However, officers from Chintadripet police station denied these reports and said that there was no act of violence involved.
