The police have made elaborate arrangements to ensure law and order in the city on Kaanum Pongal on Wednesday.
Over 10,000 police personnel have been engaged to man various locations in the city including Marina beach and Island Grounds.
According to the city police, the stretch along the Marina, where lakhs of people are expect to gather, will be under the scanner.
“We have made elaborate security arrangements and deployed additional force at Marina beach, including mounted police. A temporary control room with a public address system has been set up to assist beach-goers on the day,” a senior officer said.
Children who get separated from their parents amid the large crowds will be taken to the beach control room. A public announcement will then be made in order to help parents locate their children, the officer said.
Wooden barricades have been erected along the coast to prevent people from entering the sea. The police have also roped in volunteers to keep an eye out for miscreants.
Other prominent locations such as Elliot’s Beach and the Island Grounds, where the trade fair is underway, will also have elaborate security cover.
Fire tenders and ambulance services, too, will be on standby at several strategic locations across the city, the police said.
