A youth who posed as a graduate employed in a private bank and cheated a girl was lured into a trap and arrested by the Cyber Crime Cell police here on Tuesday.
A 24-year-old woman had lodged a complaint with the Commissioner of Police T. Rajendran that she was cheated by a man who befriended her online and entered into a relationship. On one occasion, he claimed to be in urgent need of some money following which the victim gave 15 sovereigns of gold jewels.
Thereafter, the suspect avoided communication with the woman who is a resident of Nungambakkam and post-graduate in business management.
Acting on the instructions of the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Crime Branch) C. Sridhar, the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Cyber Crimes) M. Sudhakar formed a special team to crack the case.
Fake information
Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect operated from an Internet browsing centre and gave fake information about himself to the complainant.
Police created a fake identity in the name of a girl and entered into a chat with the suspect. After a prolonged chat, the suspect showed interest in meeting at a place on EVR Salai.
Police laid a trap and arrested the accused later identified as Saifuddin (27) of Venkateswara Nagar in Chinna Kodungaiyur.
Removed from service
“Though he studied only up to Plus Two, Saifuddin created fake certificates and got employment in a private bank. When the fraud was detected, he was removed from service,” Dr. Sudhakar said.
