An inter-State racket involved in the sale of stolen cars was busted by the Sembium police on Wednesday.
According to police sources, Kannadasan (27), a textile merchant of New Avadi Road, was approached by Victor Bhasin who offered to sell a luxury car. Claiming that the original documents of the vehicle were mortgaged with a financial institution, he showed photocopies.
Impressed with the appearance of the car, Kannadasan gave an advance of Rs.4.4 lakh to purchase the vehicle. Though days passed, Victor neither returned the money nor handed over the car.
Acting on a complaint lodged by Mr. Kannadasan, Commissioner of Police T. Rajendran formed a special team to investigate the case. The team followed up clues and arrested Abbas Ali (28) of Choolai and Rajendran (49) of Kodungaiyur. The two confessed to having been involved in the business of selling stolen cars with forged documents.
Besides the luxury car, three other vehicles and cash were seized from the suspects.
“One car with a New Delhi registration number was stolen from the premises of a foreign embassy in New Delhi by a native of Arunachal Pradesh. He sold the car to Victor in Tamil Nadu,” Assistant Commissioner of Police (Sembium) V. Subbaraj said.
Victor is reported to be abroad, and special police teams have been formed to track his movements.
“We hope that more car theft cases reported across the State will be solved with his arrest. The other cars recovered from his associates were stolen from Tirupur and Marthandam. Victor has links with car thieves operating in other States,” Mr. Subbaraj said, adding that the accused were produced in a city court and remanded to judicial custody.
