PMK seeks CBI probe into rice smuggling

March 03, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:46 am IST - CHENNAI:

PMK leader S. Ramadoss on Monday demanded a CBI inquiry into the smuggling of rice meant for Public Distribution System in Tamil Nadu.

Recalling the Economic Survey report placed in Parliament, Dr. Ramadoss said smuggling of over 12 per cent of the rice allotted for distribution could not be ignored .

“A total of 31.56 lakh tonnes of rice have been smuggled in 2011-12 and its market value is Rs. 610 crore,” he said while rejecting the explanation of the State government officials that the data on smuggling was not accurate.

“Their argument is nothing but an attempt to cover up smuggling. In Tamil Nadu essential commodities will not be available in fair price shops after the 20{+t}{+h}of every month. They are smuggled,” Dr. Ramadoss alleged.
