Traffic was affected in front of the office of the police commissioner on Monday following a protest by around 200 persons belonging to the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK).
The supporters staged a demonstration seeking action against those who uprooted their flags at a meeting in Puzhal on Jan. 31.
The protesters were led by former union minister A.K. Moorthy and former MLA from Tiruttani K. Raviraj.
Mr. Raviraj and Mr. Moorthy said the party had organised a meeting in Gummidipoondi. It was attended, among others, by former union minister Anbumani Ramadoss.
The party workers had put up flags along the national highway (NH5) from Puzhal.
In his complaint to the police commissioner, Mr. Raviraj has stated that around 50 men from various political parties including the Viduthalai Chiruthai Katchi, MDMK, BSP and DMK, pulled out the flags and ripped the banners.
They also manhandled some PMK supporters besides threatening them with logs and weapons, Mr. Raviraj alleged in his complaint.
PMK supporters raised slogans and staged a demonstration after which Mr. Moorthy and Mr. Raviraj met some higher officials in the commissioner’s office as commissioner S. George was not available.
The protestors then dispersed.
