PMK for Tamil as compulsory medium

Ramadoss urges State government to enact a law or amend the existing one

February 01, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 08:31 am IST - CHENNAI:

PMK leader S. Ramadoss on Saturday urged the Tamil Nadu government to enact a law or amend the existing laws to make Tamil a compulsory medium of instruction in Tamil Nadu.

In a statement here, he recalled Karnataka’s decision to amend the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, which comes under the Concurrent List, to ensure Kannada as the compulsory medium of instruction in primary education. Mr. Ramadoss said when Tamil scholars and enthusiasts organised a fast in support of such a demand in 1999, the then DMK government promised to take steps.

“But it threw to the winds its promise. It only introduced Tamil as a subject and successive governments have done nothing towards making Tamil a compulsory medium of instruction,” he charged.

Reiterating that the thinking process of children would improve only if lessons were taught in mother tongue, Dr Ramadoss said the UNESCO had already come out with adequate evidence in support of mother tongue education.
