Swarnalatha, playback singer, known for her incredible voice dynamics, died here on Sunday morning following a lung infection.

The 37-year-old, hailing from Palakkad, was admitted to a private hospital in the city on Sunday morning after she had difficulty in breathing. According to her family members, the singer had been undergoing treatment for lung infection for over a year and did not record for films during the period.

The national-award-winning singer, who has sung nearly 6,000 songs in seven Indian languages, made her debut in ‘Neethikku Thandanai' with the song ‘Chinnachiru Kiliye Kannamma,' set to music by composer M.S.Viswanathan.

Trained in Carnatic music since the age of three, Swarnalatha has several chartbusters to her credit. Early in her career, songs such as ‘Malaiyil Yaro Manathodu Pesa' in the film ‘Shatriyan' earned her a place among the top singers in the industry. She won a national award for ‘Poraale Ponnuthaayi' from ‘Karuthamma' (1995) and a State award for ‘Povoma Oorkolam' from ‘Chinna Thambi.'

She had sung songs in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi, Bengali and Badaga for leading composers, including Illayaraja and A.R.Rahman.
