After winning laurels for Thenmerku Paruvakkatru at the 58th National Film Awards announced on Thursday, the film's production team is considering releasing it afresh.

According to the film's producer Shibu Isaac, the movie had only a seven-day run at the cinemas in the State when it was released on December 24 last year.

“Even though the film was received very well, it had to be removed from most cinema halls. My distributors, who kept saying the film would not run for long, also pointed to pressure from certain big banners with political connections to remove the film to make way for their films,” he said.

‘It was a bitter experience,” said Mr.Isaac, who made his debut as Tamil film producer with Thenmerku Paruvakkatru. The film, he added, generated revenue of close to Rs.4.7 crore. “But I did not receive a paisa .”

The film received national awards in the three categories – Best Actress (Saranya Ponvannan), Best Lyrics (Vairamuthu) and Best Tamil Film in the regional language category.

The production house also had difficulty negotiating the television rights of the film, Mr. Isaac said. “We finalised a deal with one private channel for a profitable sum, but the threats I received from representatives of another channel forced me to sell the rights to them for a lesser sum,” he said.

Director of the film, Seenu Ramasamy echoed the producer's claims. The film tells the story of a mother belonging to the working class, and highlights her toil in a context set in Theni.

He expressed confidence that the movie will be a super hit if re-released. “It is a must-watch family movie,” Mr. Ramasamy said.

Mr. Isaac said “If more people approach me expressing interest in the film, I will take a decision on its re-release,” Mr. Isaac said.
