Plan to link MRTS stations gets a boost

January 30, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 09:14 am IST - CHENNAI:

The Corporation will develop a new road connecting the Velachery, Perungudi and Taramani MRTS stations. The Chennai Corporation Council on Thursday passed a resolution pertaining to taking over a 2.92-km stretch of the road from the Railways.

The civic body had asked the Railways to hand over land a few years ago and had invited bids for the 18-metre-wide road. But, the land was not transferred. The civic body has already prepared estimates for development of a road with 1-metre-wide cycle tracks on either side.

The civic body will develop a bitumen road three months after Railways hands over the land. The road will offer connectivity between Tambaram-Velachery Road and Rajiv Gandhi Salai and improve patronage of MRTS. The stretch also has the potential to be developed into a bus route. The plan to develop a concrete road on the stretch has been shelved.
